Vacations In The Scottish Islands, The Isle Of Harris
Are you and your friends currently considering having a holiday in the United Kingdom of Great Britain? Despite the fact that the majority of tourists having a British Isles vacation decide to stay in famous places such as London, other tourists would rather stay in places such as Scotland. In the following article I talk about the Isle of Harris and the reasons why it makes such an excellent vacation destination.
Though London might have some of the most fascinating museums and galleries in the UK together with some of the most popular tourist attractions the capital city of England can not appeal to visitors of all types.
Some folk have a preference for more relaxing vacations and other people would rather have vacations which involve a little more action such as sports vacations. Interestingly the Isle of Harris, in Scotland’s Western Isles (also know as the Outer Hebrides), appeals both kinds of visitor.
Like many others staying on the beach for most of my summer vacation isn’t something I would consider. Please don’t misunderstand me, I do enjoy a relaxing visit to a beach, and Harris definitely features some of the most breathtaking beaches in Great Britain, but, I also enjoy spending time elsewhere while on a vacation. I like to soak in the atmosphere, I also like to experience the local culture and especially enjoy sampling the food. If the truth be known I simply enjoy visiting new places each year and I I spend a great deal of time trying to discover somewhere one hundred percent unique. Most probably this is why I so thoroughly enjoy visiting the Hebrides island known as the Isle of Harris and why I frequently decide to book self catering houses on Harris.
One of the main reasons people travel to the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the culture and landscape of the Isles. The Isle of Harris culture has, throughout history been incredibly influenced by the Norse, Celtic, Scottish and English races. Today the majority of folk speak in the Gaelic language and although some talk in English, it is commonly their second language. The Harris inhabitants are amongst the friendliest on planet earth and their hospitality is extremely well known. The people of the Isle of Harris are justifiably proud of the amazingly beautiful Harris countryside and go to some length to keep the island tidy so it is incredibly important to minimise your own mess.
Remember that rubbish doesn’t just make the countryside look a mess it is also incredibly dangerous to wild creatures.
A further vital thing to learn is that the Isle of Harris roads are not the same as elsewhere in the United Kingdom in some areas you will need to traverse single track roads and you will have to, at times, use passing places to allow oncoming traffic to pass but also to let traffic from behind to pass. Just remember to stop on the left hand side of the road. However, if the vehicle wishing to pass is very large and the passing place is on your right hand side you can move over into it to let the said vehicle pass easily but at all times be careful not to end up off the road too much.
I hope that the above article interests you sufficiently in having a short break on Harris. Large numbers of people the Scotland’s Hebrides choose to stay in two vacation destinations. There are a small number of other islands to visit including South Uist, North Uist and Lewis. Why not consider staying in a self catering house on the Isle if Harris for and then stay in a room in a hotel on North Uist or a hotel on South Uist for the remainder of your vacation?
