Did you know that Golf was invented in Scotland?

Golf was invented in Scotland, and dates back to at least the 17th century, possibly even earlier – the name is believed to come from an Old German word, ‘gowf’, meaning a club or bat. The oldest golf course in the world is Musselburgh Links, but there are many vary old golf courses in Scotland, most famously St. Andrews. The early golfers decided to play the course through twice each time, but it is believed that the reason golf courses today have 18 holes is that St. Andrews only had room for nine .

 

Golf’s Scottish origin is a matter of some controversy among the Dutch, the Chinese and the French, who all claim that they had much similar club-and-ball games much longer ago. However, it seems clear that there is more to golf than just the club and the ball, and that golf as it is played today was at least perfected, if not entirely invented out of thin air, in Scotland, while there is no doubting they did.

 

Since then, little has really changed about the game. The grass has got shorter and smoother, as lawnmower technology has improved, the wooden clubs has been replaced with metal ones, and the balls have been improved by the addition of rubber, but that’s about it.

 

However, that golf really started to spread all over the world, it wasn’t until the 20th century. There are no golf course in China until 1985, but now there are more than 200. Since the Second World War, golf has become insanely popular in Japan, even though they don’t really have the space to build the courses – they have become pioneers of indoor and virtual golf. Today, it is thought that there are over 30,000 golf courses in the world – that’s well over a hundred for every country, although some countries obviously have far more courses than others, particularly in the English-speaking world.

A Stress Free Way to Improve your New Golf Swing

The shoulders, hands and club head are going into the last movement at the right speed and angle.  Everything should be positioned to follow through without pushed force.  The triple combination allows the hands the momentum to release the power at just the right direction and along the line of flight.

How to Get the Right Backswing for the New Golf Swing

Anytime you’re looking to get the best golf backswing for your game, it’s important to keep the club face about eight to twelve inches back from the ball.  In the beginning stages you will have to make sure your hands and arms are the only thing you use.  When you start the backswing, keep everything square to your addressing line and when it begins refrain from rolling and turning the forearms or wrists.

Keeping the club face straight is extremely important, and this will allow you do it more frequently.  However, the shoulders are another important feature that must be balanced during the swing.  Just keep in mind that if your club face isn’t straight, then you should stop and begin again.

It’s time to think about that great swing you’re about to accomplish.  So get up and address the ball as you normally would and make sure your hands and club face are both square.  At the same time you’ll need to put a little emphasis on the fact that the shoulders should be parallel as well.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, the start of your swing is the exact same way you want to end it.  Those who experience a hard time with this end up hooking, slicing, or chili dipping the golf ball.  So make sure your hands and wrists are in the proper locations so you can leave yourself with a great golf swing.

Swing using a short shot approach.

Does your short shot stroke utilize the hands when bringing direct contact with the club?  When you have the proper backswing you will notice a  sensation that runs all the way from your forearms to your upper shoulder.  During your turn it is extremely important to keep the stomach retracted.  Not only will this keep your shoulder underneath your chin, it will also bring you to the high point of your swing.

Even if it’s difficult to retract your stomach, do it anyways.

This brings us to your upper arm leverage.  We’re sure you’ve been told to keep your inside arm extended, but make it’s not completely stiff.

Keep in mind you need to refrain from opening your forearms and wrists.  If you do this properly, the clubface will be properly set.  When you’re into your swing, the upper arm will be more free.  It helps you make your turn in a more fluid motion.  However, this is all due to having a retracted stomach.

Once this becomes more comfortable you will realize it’s the easiest way to get the maximum upper left arm leverage.  If you’re still having problems, try building a good traced pattern for your swing.  As long as you stay within your line, the end result should be a positive one.

Alright, let’s recap and add a little information about the feet.

A. As you begin to turn, feel the motion sense moving up your inside arm.

B. During the turn, retract the stomach.  If you don’t do this you won’t be able to get the right amount of leverage on your swing.

C. Flexing your back knee is important.  Make sure it’s not completely stiff, but enough to keep the proper motion.  Plus your right hip will be set to the back, instead of drawn upwards.

Now it’s time to work on the feet.

Just as you do when you walk, the weight of your body is going to shift from one foot to the other.  It’s as easy as setting one foot in front of the other and going for a stroll.

Obviously this is going to different depending on if you’re a lefty or a right, but the end result is still the same.  When you move into the backswing, your the heel will move off the ground just barely.  This process begins when you start to move back from the ball.  In the end you will move the weight to the the ball of your foot.

The Basics of a Good Golf Grip for a New Golf Swing

Anytime you hear a debate about your golf game, somewhere along the line it turns to what role your hands play in the operation.  I have my own thoughts as well, but then again I still have other thoughts about the golf grip.

In my opinion a beginning golfer should pay close attention to how you apply your golf grip.  The idea behind it is to be able to give yourself as much control as possible.  While this is important, you also want to have the kind of power that your shaft allows.  However, if you’re working with a veteran of the game, the golf grip isn’t as important since it becomes natural.

Better golfers give you the opportunity to work with someone who has developed a routine grip on the club.  The beginners will fluctuate between one golf grip and another, giving you a better understanding of it all.

Okay, with all this being said I want to talk about Eric Brown for a minute.  He is one of the best professionals out there in the post-war era.  Over the years he’s accumulated a ridiculous amount of achievements and brought so much to the game of golf.  It makes you wonder why he couldn’t school himself and become a legendary golfer.

Whenever you take a look at his new golf swing, the movement is as fine and flowing as one could be.  However, there is a lot left to say about his technique in which he uses an unorthodox swing.  Seriously, he should grip the club with the right hand so much under the shaft which sets the V of his right hand to the V on his left.

Regardless, Eric Brown is like the Brett Favre of golf techniques.  He looks so fluent doing them, but we wouldn’t recommend it as a teaching stays for a lot of people.  Especially considering most everyone else would fail.

Whenever you want to reshape your golf swing, it always starts with the golf grip.  If you do not keep the same fluent motion throughout, the aura will point you in a zone like no other.  Believe you/me, it’s a feeling you love to have on the golf course.  If you don’t, now only will your swing suffer, but your mental game as well.

It’s very important that you spend the time working on having the correct golf grip.  Why?  Well, in the end it will contribute to every other part of your game.  Granted, the feet, legs, arms, back, and shoulders will play their parts as well, but it all begins with your hands.

Just think as your hands as your heart, without the heart you can not flow blood through the system.  Without the proper golf grip you can’t swing without the hands helping everything else perform properly.

Okay, what it all comes down to is the correct placement on the shaft.  If you can master the grip, the rest of the hand action won’t be as much of a problem.

If you look at the top players in the world, most of them use the Vardon overlapping grip.  This is your little finger on the right hand is latched on to the forefinger of the left.  It allows you to form a unity between the hands.  It’s the most popular grip I teach, unless of course my golfer has smaller hands.

So if you’re thinking I can’t teach you with smaller fingers, don’t think that way.  I would then move to the double handed grip.

Then we have the interlocking grip.  It’s probably the most eccentric grip out of the 3 we mentioned.  However, because of its difficulty you should use this while under the proper supervision.

Each one of these grips has a common factor.  Anytime pro players use them, they ensure that hands are unified.  What it comes down to is that golf is a two-handed game with the left as a controller and not to let the right over power it.  You’ll find this to be one of the most important factors.

In the end a good technique starts with a good golf grip.

The Ultimate New Golf Swing

When you start to become an experienced golfer, you can just feel when you go into your downswing as you reach the peak of your backswing.  When you reach this point, it’s a good golf swing technique.

Is this a little confusing?  Don’t worry, it just means we’re about to talk to the hands.  When you head up to the top of your new golf swing, the upper arm leverage becomes apparent.  You can feel the control that is building up in the hands, wrists, arms, and shoulder.  Almost like a jet engine warming up before it goes from 0 to a gazillion MPH off a carrier.

Obviously you want to have a smooth fluent motion going from your golf backswing to you downswing, but it’s a little more difficult then it sounds.  Everything must be done in reverse when you’re coming back down.  The goal here is to have a motion that works as one when you’re coming back down to hit the ball.

Unfortunately, many golfers mistakenly swing harder in the downswing and think it will bring more power.  The end result usually ends up either right or left of the fairway.  However, if you slow down the action and feel the power shoot up your arm, it is like a sense that tells you to pause at the top of the backswing and shift downward.

The downswing then gives you the opportunity to slow the drive of your hands and inner arm across the body. Then of course you have to remember the shift of weight in the lower portion of your body with the shaft of the club behind the hands.

When you do this, it will allow you to have the power in your hands when you reach the top of the swing.  It will also give the hands the ability to work more freely.  This results in keeping the club face square and gives you more power when driving through the ball.

You will notice that the head will then come in where it is almost level with the golf ball.  If you are doing this correctly, your club head will be set in an 8 o’ clock position or even nine.  However, you won’t see it any lower.

It’s probably one of the most difficult positions of your golf swing and one I see students struggle with all the time.  What it comes down to is if you can master this technique like many other golfers, the end result will be unprecedented in your golf scores.  Anyone who can have constant accuracy with any club will be able to have a hitting line that is repetitive.

I’ll tell you what, here’s a good way to look at it.  If you have a mediocre golfer with a nice shapely swing and unsure about the delivery, there’s a reason for it.  It most likely has to do with the hand control and timing that makes a golfer feel uncomfortable and will wind up varying the position of the club head.  What ends up happening is the release into the hitting area is constantly altered.

A good way to figure this out is by setting up four or five balls and pitch them on the green with the trusty 7-iron.  If you’re having problems you will notice that one ball will end up on the back of the green, one on the front, one short, one left, and probably one right.  Try doing it during your golf short game and you’ll end up all over the course.

The only way to fix this is by working and training yourself to give your hands enough room.  If you can’t bring the club into the appropriate position, you won’t be able to feel like you’re hitting the ball off the carpet.

Does this make a little more sense?  You have to shape the delivery the same way you did the swing.  Just remember that you need to train your hands to hit that eight o’ clock position.  If you can wait for it, the power will be able to pour back into the ball.

You just have to want to get the right golf swing technique.  Do this and you’ll improve it dramatically.

Yet, when striking the ball in a bunker you should strike the sand that is several inches before the ball. You should NEVER strike the ball itself when it is in the sand trap. This will result in the ball going deeper down into the sand instead of into the bunker. During your stroke your club should slowly move back outside the line and then swing down normally. This will allow you to successfully play the ball out of the sand trap.

If you do everything properly the iron will drop into the sand and the ball will fly out onto the green. By doing this properly you will create a cushion of sand on the edge of the club. This cushion of sand will allow you to gently play the ball up and onto the green or fairway.

You should never manipulate the club head when trying to play a ball out of a sand trap. Many new golfers make the big mistake of trying to manipulate the head of the club. You should always try to remain the angle as well as the shape of the club. Another mistake that a lot of people make is allowing their wrist to roll over throughout a shot. Maintaining the length of your golf backswing as well as your follow-through is also important when hitting a ball out of the bunker. You should always attempt to maintain your focus when taking this type of a shot.
