A Vacation In Cochin, India
Cochin, also known as Kochi, is a tropical paradise of sandy beaches and waving palm trees. It is within the state of Kerala, which is a narrow strip of coastal territory in Southern India that stretches down the Western Ghats, and up in to the Arabian sea.
It is cleaner and quieter than many other Indian tourist places. In fact, you would be forgiven for mistaking the feel and look of the place for a small, traditional European city. The influence of the British, Dutch and Portuguese, who all ruled there at one time or another, can still be felt in many aspects of life, not limted to architecture, infrastructure, language, and social attitudes.
Cochin is a deeply religious place, and people who live there have varied ethnic backgrounds. You will find Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Jews living together harmoniously and celebrating all religious festivals with enthusiasm. All places of worship exist there (churches, mosques, temple and synagogues), and you will come across some really fantastic examples of them, with colorful and interesting histories.
Cochin’s most famous landmark is a set of Chinese fishing nets at harbor, which is the oldest part of the city. These fishing nets are over a hundred years old, yet they are still used on a daily basis. Not only can you watch the fishermen work, you can also join in and help them should you wish to do so. There are, of course, lots of other worthwhile sights there too, more than enough to occupy you for a week or two.
The coastline that extends from Cochin has some of the best beaches in India. The coconut lined sands and turquoise blue sea, make a picture perfect destination to spend to your vacation. They are unspoilt too, with typically just a few shacks and restaurants lining the shores, meaning that you can enjoy the surroundings just as nature created them.
As for where to stay, you should consider one of the many homestays there, which provide a much needed source of extra income to the locals, while at the same time giving you an insight into the real Cochin. Under this homestay concept, you get to stay with a local family, and will be shown around and looked after by them.
